I would like to share about my judging at science fairs within the last couple months! Firstly, I judged for the first time at a school, specifically Penn. I volunteered to judge 4th-5th graders on their projects, poster, and presentation. I loved being able to interact with the cute, short scientists =)
I also judged at the Northern Indiana Regional Science and Engineering Fair and it was my fourth year in a row to do so. If any of my cohorts have not participated in this yet, I strongly encourage your participation next year. The event is a step before the state level competition. There are a wide variety of grades and topics. Some judging groups designate 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and honorary mention positions and give the students feedback. Some judging groups are in charge of distributing specific awards. Businesses, Notre Dame, schools, etc. ask us to determine within a specific division which student should receive their award, which could be a monetary award, a microscope gift to the student’s school, a certificate, etc. The fair is held at Stepan Center. The students fill the room, the parents have to leave, we judge, and then the place is opened up for the public. It is a very exciting event and for me it has been very self-rewarding. Participating and encouraging the students is truly a pleasure.
