This was the first Collaborating for Education and Research Forum that I have attended or participated in and I was thoroughly impressed by the presentations, attendance and collaborations that were made possible by such a forum. In particular I am excited about connections made with others interested in place based environmental education as a way to improve performance in STEM and foster ecological citizenship in young people.
I was excited about Joe Bellina’s presentation on the Indiana Science Initiative, and have already forwarded on the information and contacts to my daughter’s school here in South Bend, hoping that they may be interested in implementing the program.
I also made a number of contacts with people/schools interested in implementing place based environmental education and collaborating with me using the Teacher as Researcher Action research model to better understand impacts of such programming on a number of different variables. Including (and closest to my heart) how youth begin to construct the natural world, their interest in STEM, community building, and other student behavioral outcomes.
So, great job everyone!! Can’t wait to see where this all leads!
