Today we’re starting the Bioeyes training institute for the teachers. I’m especially excited about running the so-called “modern lab” experiments. We’ve got a two-day bacterial transformation experiment to make bacteria expressing GFP, and then a three day experiment testing the ability to taste a bitter compound called PTC. The participants will also test which gene they haves, to see if the tasting ability correlates with tasting ability (as it should!).
I love sharing what I do with people. I don’t know that I’d want to do this every week, because it does take time away from research, but it’s so important for science teachers to keep up with what’s currently going on in the field. Anytime I can help with that, I know that I’m increasing the quality of science education, which is, of course, my ultimate goal
