Jordan Hall Astronomy

The Astro group met last night to work on our own asteroid research. We took CCD images of the field containing asteroid 1 Ceres, the first asteroid ever discovered (it is now classified as a dwarf planet).
The above photo shows are asteroid observing setup. We use an 11-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope with an SBIG ST8 CCD camera. The camera is operated using the laptop computer. The scope is attached to a concrete post set on the rooftop platform at Jordan Hall. Our students, Ben and Chris, are on the left, Shelly Dolan, a Notre Dame graduate student in Astrophysics, is on the right.

The observing facility at Jordan Hall is named the Morrison Observatory after Jim Morrison, the donor of the money I assume (not THE Jim Morrison). I set up a Clear Sky Clock for the Morrison Observatory, it is located at the following address: http://www.cleardarksky.com/c/MrsnObINkey.html?1 (Don’t confuse this with the “Morris” Observatory located near Warsaw, Indiana.
