Today we modeled the scale distance between the planets by dividing the AU by 4000 then lining up on the sidewalk. To add an element of “fun”, we also were given a message for Pluto to transfer to Neptune who would in turn transfer it to Uranus and so on. I was Pluto and since we worked backwards for the message, I was gifted with the weighty responsibility of learning the message and starting us off on the right path. The message was “The sun sees eight planets and five dwarf planets including blue Neptune, Red Mars, and Jupiter with its crazy clouds.” Ya. Right. BUT I believe I handed it off reasonably in tact. Unfortunatly, by the time it got to Mercury, the message was “The sun see 10 planets.” Hmmm.

It was a really fun activity and one I plan to bring to my students this fall along with the scale sizes project.

Yes folks, they made me. And now that you’re here, you are now obligated to read it!
To summarize Astroweek so far, on day one we soared outside the galaxy in the Digital Visualization Theater. Also learned how to use Jing Editor and Dropbox. Way cool.

As you can see, I am sitting with rapt attention!
On day two, we went on a scavenger hunt. Our telescope was missing a lens and had a few other issues but, even with a handicap, Anita and I won.

We also thought about the protrayal of space in art. I plan to incorporate that more in my classes this year.
Today was day 3 of the Astroweek workshop. We began by looking at the sun through telescopes then toured the floor of Jordan Hall and the ND sundial. We also made sundials of our own. I didn’t even get tangled in the tape.

Awesome activities, awesome food, awesome presentors. Gotta love it.
For my symposium lesson outline, I’m going to talk about my plans to bring my students on a tour of Jordan Hall and a visit to the DVT.
